Seoul to help Haiti

The Seoul government will send some $1 million of relief aid to Haiti hit by a massive earthquake, the Foreign Ministry said yesterday.
The aid is expected to include emergency supplies and rescue personnel.
"We have decided to provide support in order to take part in the international humanitarian effort for aiding the Haiti government and people," said Kim Young-sun, the Foreign Ministry spokesman. "We express our deep condolences to the people of Haiti and hope for restoration as soon as possible."
Kim said support from Korea may increase when combined with the assistance supplied by non-government organizations.
Regarding the Korean community in Haiti, the ministry reported that all Koreans -- there are around 70 in Haiti -- had been evacuated to safety. One of the missing people, known by his last name Suh, was found yesterday by an emergency rescue team assembled by nearby Dominica and was evacuated to the island country, along with the other Koreans in Haiti.

"We will continue to monitor the situation as the earthquake may have further repercussions," Kim said.

Haiti was hit on Wednesday by an earthquake of 7.0-magnitude.
