Preparing the 20th YOUTH FESTIVAL - MLADIFEST - Medjugorje 2009

Preparing the 20th YOUTH FESTIVAL - MLADIFEST - Medjugorje 2009

The parish Medjugorje is preparing for the 20th International Youth Prayer Meeting – Mladifest, with the theme, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2,5) (see: Program)

Flags

On the first evening of the festival - on Saturday after the Rosary and before Holy Mass - there will be welcoming words by and to the youth from different countries, and on Monday, a procession through the parish. For these two occasions, we would like to present in a solemn procession all the flags of the countries that are traditionally taking part in the Festival.

This is why we would like to ask you to be so kind to help us to get flags of exact dimensions 3m x 1,5 m. On the list of the flags of different countries, (see here) we have marked which flags we do already have, and we are inviting you to be so kind and send to us those that are missing. The flags should be send by post or through a group of pilgrims latest by the 1st of July this year. On the list of flags, those that we already have are marked with a green cross. As soon as we get a firm promise for a flag, we will write that it is coming (“coming” in green letters), and as soon as it arrives, we shall put a green cross. If your flag is not on the list, and you want it to be, please let us know! For the contact, please write to the e-mail address lidija_paris@medjugorje.hr. Thank you!

Instrumentalists

We also invite instrumentalists who already participated in the festival and who know the style and the spirit of the Medjugorje Mladifest to come and to contribute again with their art to this jubilee meeting.

All the musicians who take part in the choir and the orchestra will have a common accommodation, and they are arriving in Medjugorje latest by July 29th, when they have the first rehearsal together. The following two days (July 30 and 31), they shall have a special prayer program and musical rehearsals. For the contact - same e-mail address as above. In anticipation of your coming, we welcome you!

Where is father Jozo Zovko ofm ?

ISLAND BADIJA NEAR KORCULA
Franciscans, as more than centuries-old architects of that amazing small island in an even more amazing natural maritime zone, are returning to their island, after a little more than half a century of being forced to stay away. To our public, especially the well-meaning, we concisely introduce our cherished island. The beginning of permanent inhabitance of monks on Badija reaches into the tenth century, when the Saint Benedictine order on the island was established by the abbey («Abbatia» from which the name «Badija»). Subsequently, after the extinguishment of the Benedictine order upon request of the bishop of Korčula from Krk, in 1392 arriving on Badija are Franciscans of Bosnian vicary which Korčula’s Executive Council documented from May 3rd, 1394, grant the Franciscans a portion of the island for the construction of a monastery, and in the year 1398, the entire island.

From that time on Badija continues to be a spiritual and cultural center in the Korčula-Pelješac region. The construction of the monastery and church, Cloister - one of the most beautiful on the Croatian coast and the Holy Cross chapel, among other accompanying objects and numerous sacred works of art, of which the most well-known Gothic crucifixions, called Badija’s Holy Cross (for now located in the church Our Lady of Angel in the Franciscan monastery above Orebić), which was created by our famous sculptor Juraj Petrović in 1457. Franciscans, namely functioned on Badija as the clergy, hearing confession and delivering sermons, devoting to prayer and attending to business, engaged in deepening knowledge of theology, philosophy and the natural sciences, and individuals were distinguished in artistic talent and the writing of theological and spiritual documents. In Franciscan simplicity they attracted believers and distinguished people from the area, and from wider circles, especially in the area of the Republic of Dubrovnik.

In more recent times Badija has grown into a significant cultural center. Namely, in the year 1906, the provincial administration makes the decision to establish a private classical high school. The good work of the high school was recognized by the government of that period, so Badija’s private school, from the order of the ministry of sciences on December 1, 1924, grew into a classical high school with accreditation. That classical high school had professors who were Franciscans and lay people, all of who were highly educated people (for example, among them, Dr. Fr. Vjenceslav Bandera, Dr. Fr. Ante Matijević and Dr. Fr. Vid Mihičić, who were educated abroad), also the school operated on such an envious niveau that on Badija arrived students from all corners of the country, Yugoslavia, which existed at the time. From Badija’s pews later sprouted distinguished professors, doctors, lawyers, among them Dr. Ivo Padovan, who until recently was the president of Croatia’s Academy of Arts and Sciences. Many are still alive and many are from Korčula and Pelješac, and from other parts of the country that existed at the time, who gladly mention their days spent on Badija and the knowledge that they gained from the classical high school exemplary led by Franciscans.

The second world was brought an end to that kind of work by Badija’s Franciscans, and that in a brutal way. Upon resolution of the Presidency of the National Republic of Croatia, from December 12th, 1949, at the request of military authorities, an expropriation of the monastery and island took place for purposes of the country, in the monastery and on the island were located the JNA army, which stayed on Badija until 1958. Upon withdrawal of JNA Korčula’s county district gives over the monastery to sporting/athletic organizations of the Socialist Republic of Croatia, after 1985. HTP-Korčula, a hotel company, with this athletes further possessed an area for training and recreation. All these events occurred against the will of the monks, the real owners, who - for mention of an important fact - never wanted to accept an ordered compensation which was offered by the superiors at the time, especially the provincials Fr. Petar Vlasić and Fr. Berard Barčić, although they were almost forced to take. Such responsible and courageous behavior turned out to be crucial in the current settlement of lawful property rights procedures of returning Badija to its historical owners. The present-day democratic government of Croatia could not act otherwise.

It was tragic that the holders of Badija for 50 years - except for adaptations for hotel services on the first floor of the monastery - did not attend to the preservation of its highly valuable artistic heritage. On the contrary the most valuable objects had to be taken to different places, to monasteries or churches and put in monastery museums and libraries. The church and chapel of Holy Cross were transformed into a warehouse repository of the lowest nature. Significantly ruined or damaged or completely demolished altars, statues, wooden choir stalls, and other items, remain testament to the barbaric behavior towards more than centuries-old spiritually-artistic creativity, achieved by the diligence and love of generations of monks.

Now, Badija at long last, returns to its historical and moral owners. Already have began fundamental operations of restoration. Under the leadership of Fr. Josip Sopta, the Provincial vicar, along with the consent and supervision of the Institution for restoration of cultural monuments in Dubrovnik, first began a radical renewal of the church and chapel roofs and the cleaning of the interior objects, for which work a significant amount of money was given by Croatia’s ministry of culture, and our provincial community. At the same time was started the cleaning of accumulated garbage all over the island, the installment of a device for keeping the island safe from fires, the improvement of sanitary conditions for large buildings and all else. The provincial administration of Saint Jerome with its headquarters in Zadar, which the island falls under, with reference to the monastery on Badija, already many years-therefore, and even before the lawful property rights return of Badija to its historical owners - becomes responsive to planning the use of the monastery and island. The before mentioned administration already named the superior of the monastery, respectively the provincial delegate for leading overall concerns for renewal and giving meaning to Badija, Fr. Jaokim - Jaki Gregov, in addition to being an artist-sculptor. Badija, in this manner receives monks who with love and care, as throughout the centuries, return its spiritual, moral and cultural dignity.

Why is there a need to use a qualified local Guide in Medjugorje and in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Why is there a need to use a qualified local Guide in Medjugorje and in Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Bosnia and Herzegovina and Medjugorje especially are truly pleasure to visit. For many people, coming to Medjugorje was a life changing experience
To make the most of your visit, it could be a good idea to use a professional guide.
There are a number of criteria that need to be met in order to be a qualified guide. You need to have passed a difficult exam, be born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, live within the region in which you took the exam, have civil and political rights, obtained the minimum school leaving qualifications and are without a criminal record. The exam consists of a written and an oral test on the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially in the local region, geography, tourism legislation and the local economy (agriculture, factories, local produce and craftsmanship) so that you can explain about the local monuments, museums, churches, and archaeological sites, and be proficient in the local customs. Also, you must speak a minimum of one foreign language to be a guide.
In addition, to become a local guide in the parish of Medjugorje you also need to meet number of criteria set by church authorities (Bible, catechism of the catholic church, messages of Our Lady in Medjugorje etc.)

Bosnia and Herzegovina is divided into regions and each region provides its own guide who is allowed to work only in their local region. Therefore a guide from Medjugorje (Mostar) is forbidden to guide in Sarajevo and vice versa, according to the law. The authorities can always stop the group and check that the guide, tour manager or driver is qualified, and if not, they risk being prosecuted under BiH law. This is why a professional always wears his or her identity badge and number which provides the customer with the relevant information to file a complaint, if need be.

Fr. Jozo's Reflection March 25, 2009 Message

Fr. Jozo's Reflection March 25, 2009 Message

Message of March 25, 2009

"Dear children! In this springtime, when everything is awakening from the winter sleep, you, too, should awaken your souls with prayer so that they may be ready to receive the light of the risen Jesus. Little children, may He draw you closer to His Heart so that you may become open to eternal life. I pray for you and intercede before the Most High for your sincere conversion. Thank you for having responded to my call."

Dear brothers and sisters! Dear members of our big prayer family! We are well into Lent. This Lenten program is also the wish of the Church that is trying to interpret Christ's call and will for conversion and a radical change of life. One should die to oneself, one should get out of the old self. It is a dying that is directing us daily to the Risen Lord that we may walk in the light and hope to recognize Him alive, as the apostles did, in his Word and the sacraments through our humble prayer.

The Queen of Peace takes a picture from the nature without fear: the picture of spring. Winter deprived the nature of the appearance of life. Winter allows no vegetation. At the first sight everything is black and dead. All deciduous trees are without signs of life. On the outside no difference between a dead and a living tree can be observed. They are all alike, the same. But it is not so. Living trees are alive in winter conditions as well. This life is hidden to the eye, but it is real.

Springtime reveals this best. After winter months the sun appears and remains longer and longer in our sky with each day. Its warm rays awaken the dormant life in every tree, in every seed. This heliotropism hides in every even the least living grain and its delicate embryo, wakening it and directing it to grow towards the sun. In the heart of each of us hides a longing after God. In our soul there is an irresistible yearning after the Living God. As the nature awakes from the winter sleep, so the Queen of Peace wants us to awaken to a new life. The Resurrected Jesus, our Lord and God, is our sun that we are searching and irresistibly pining for. And we are all looking for him and we all need him. How is it possible to give up the dream?! Is it possible not to wake up and remain in sleep for Easter?! Yes, it can easily happen. This happens to those who in these times are busy hectically watching the Church and censuring it for lack of feeling and
loyalty for others. They do not hear what is being preached to them and what they are called to. They dwell on weaknesses or disorganization of the faithful which prevent them from giving more help, especially to the infirm and the poor. And indeed, Our Lady has no words of praise for us. She allows unbelievers to teach us a lesson, reminding us in this way that we are not perfect, that we have not by far responded to her call. A Christian who has ruined his family and his sacramental marriage by his haughtiness, is always on the lookout for somebody else's weakness to show the Church and other Christians that they are no better than him. How to wake up and turn to oneself? This is not possible without true conversion. And again, conversion cannot occur without persistent and humble prayer. That we may wake up in this holy Eastertide, let us watch the pictures of spring. Every bud is an untold life story. Every shoot, every flower is a miraculous sign
before our eyes.

Man often tries to make flowers, leaves, fruit and the like by imitating nature. From afar you think it is alive. But when you look closer or touch it with your finger, you see it is an imitation. It is no original. Only God creates and gives life. Only he renews it. So we are responsible for our life. We have been called to bear fruit. We cannot do it without God. It is a grace of God to be a fruitful Christian. It is no imitation of holiness, love, goodness, but a gift of God given to each of us.

Learn from flowers. Learn from the least living creatures and they will teach you. Everything is a miracle and everything speaks of Him – their Creator.

How is it possible to wake up in this springtime permeated by the Easter grace and light? Only through the inner activity. Let us start with prayer.

Let us prepare through prayer for Easter and the meeting with Jesus. These days all churches are full. Every believer is eager to give up his sin. Just think: Sin is our real death. Not a semblance of death. It is indeed our death. Go to confession in contrition, and like the prodigal son decide to return to the father. Who is the prodigal son and who is the father? A sinner is the prodigal son, and the father is the merciful God who is waiting for us. He is not sleeping. He is waiting for us awake. And he always feels compassion and is always sensitive to our tears, our repentance, and our decision to remain faithful to the Father.

Through the sacrament of reconciliation the good Father embraces us, and takes us to his feast. This feast is Holy Mass. Ever since the Lateran Council Easter communion has been a commandment of the Church and our obligation to feed on the food of immortality by God's grace. It is this light that shines from these divine sources. Freed from death and given eternal, immortal life to drink, a Christian receives the light of the Resurrected Jesus. Jesus became man, died and rose from the dead only that all men may be saved.

This truth of salvation and our redemption brings us to his pierced Heart from where we got everything. That fortunate apostle Thomas, after having put his hand into the pierced heart, fell prostrate, confessing repentantly against all unbelief: "My Lord and my God!"

And his new life started from this meeting. This is what happens to each of us when we kneel down in the confessionary and, beating our chest, find his grace and salvation. This is the Easter light and his peace, the truth that never passes, that never devalues, because it is divine. To this grace do I open myself, and it secures eternal life for me. So, my God is alive, risen from the dead, and he is my peace. He is my eternal life. Already here did he plant into our souls this aspiration, this heliotropism after eternity. This is not an empty wish or a phrase of awkward preachers of old, but the truth of his Resurrection.

The Queen of Peace is in prayer for us and our conversion, i.e. our springtime of faith. Let us wake up and continue waking up others and preparing for the meeting with him. Here we have the prudent virgins to teach us. They took both the lamps and the oil, and were awake when the Bridegroom and the guests arrived. And they went in with him to the wedding feast. And the door closed. This is the time when we can wake up our neighbors and help them fill their lamps with oil. Let us turn in this holy and gracious Easter time to the Resurrected and his Mother, and let us recognize him in every brother.

In this month of spring, April, we are going to pray for the following intentions:

For our successful and fruitful Assembly, that the Queen of Peace may instruct us this year, too, how to respond to the call and how to live her messages in a more fruitful way.
For all members of our fraternity – the prayer community of Visitation – that we may truly wake up, that our community may grow not only in numbers but also in holiness.
For the visionaries, parishioners, for all pilgrims, for all priests in Međugorje and those leading the pilgrims, that they may do nothing out of habit, but that they may rather live and preach the grace of Our Lady's apparitions as witnesses.

Dear brothers and sisters! One more message and one more call, one more chance like spring stands before us. Let us be grateful to Our Lady for everything. I ask the Queen of Peace to instruct us in everything, to be close to us, lest nobody should fall off. I pray to the Resurrected Lord to come out into the paths and roads of our life and to liberate us from every fear and illusion, to plant us deep into his Easter truth. At the end I wish each of you a happy and blessed EASTER. With sincere greetings

five stones by father Jozo Zovko ofm

I give you the weapon against your Goliath, here are your little stones:
  1. Prayer
  2. Fasting
  3. Holy Mass
  4. The Bible
  5. Confession

By Fr JOZO ZOVKO OFM

One lovely day in the history of Israel, the figure of Goliath came forth. He was a strong man, proud and invincible. Although Israel was incapable of imagining how it might defeat such a strong warrior, the Lord knew how to do it. He chose a young boy, a shepherd named David. The Lord told him to gather five stones in the river and face the giant. Trusting only in God’s help, David went forth; he defeated and killed Goliath.
Our Lady has chosen you, like David; you who are small, just as you are. She has suggested that you put five stones into your sack in order to overcome the atheism that surrounds us, that paganistic mentality that is being disseminated and seems invincible. Neither we nor the Church are capable of conquering materialism on our own. Our Lady has appeared in Medjugorje to declare that this is possible. Here are her five stones: Prayer, Fasting, the Mass, the Bible and Confession. With these simple weapons we overcome the world.

First stone: Prayer
Our Lady insists upon prayer. She wept when she appeared upon Krizevac, because Christians no longer pray. Her tears are a medication for you; they fall upon your heart made of stone in order to transform it. Our Lady tells us that to pray means to live as the Church lives.
The gifts, the five stones, have not been given to us as a gratuitous perfection, but in order to develop our spiritual potentialities, to cause the growth of the seeds, which will sprout forth if they fall upon fertile soil. Let us take the gift of faith: it is developed if a family prays together, if we learn to live with the Lord. He who prays knows how to love; he who loves knows how to pray. Many families no longer live love because they no longer are united in prayer.
This month the leaves have fallen from the trees. Next Spring we will see nature transform and renew itself once again. He who prays transforms quickly. What is the significance of prayer? Let us recall St Augustine’s words, “Man lives if he breathes; prayer is the breath for the Christian.” The Christian who stops praying, dies.
Prayer is the first weapon in your knapsack. You must begin praying now so that you may be transformed and raise yourself up with others as well. Priests, parents, everyone, must pray. Prayer is a gift and a principal weapon given to the Church. The Church is neither an idea nor a political party; it is a family that prays, a family that loves. This is the reason Our Lady insists that prayer is needed in order to transform the world.

Second stone: Fasting
The second gift, another stone in your sack, is fasting: from cigarettes, from television, from an evil thought, from a negative project, and from food.
Fasting demonstrates your individual capacity to love and affirms that you are important for everyone. Fasting is medicine and a sacrifice. With fasting egoism is defeated. He who knows how to fast is capable of hearing his neighbour, of being available for others, and of understanding how to love the entire world. He who fasts sees himself and others truthfully and is aware of how to cleanse his inner self.
Our weakness is nothing if we possess the ability to love. Even our own physical sufferings, if offered to the Lord, are a gift.

Third stone: Holy Mass
The Mass is the third stone. In May, Our Lady admonished us, “You do not know how to live the Mass.” The Mass is not simply a rite; it is a mystery and a gift of the Lord. It is a sacrament which cannot be comprehended without humility. We are unable to celebrate the Mass without a humble heart, which casts aside the garment of pride. The white garment of the priest is a symbol of humility and of liberation from sin.
In the Mass the Incarnation occurs, the transubstantiation of the bread and wine. This is also a sign of our transformation: from death we are brought to life. The Mass transforms the Christian, transforms the Church, because with the Mass Jesus is offered completely to the Church. The Mass is the origin of the Church, the Mystical Body. The Mass-Sacrifice renders the Church a holy family.
In the Mass one is born again if one’s own life is placed upon the altar as a sacrifice, in the manner of Jesus. We are the drop of water poured into the wine; the Church is united with the Blood of Jesus. Therefore you must not just listen to the Holy Mass but live it. Without the Mass the Church does not exist; without it the Church is an orphan.

Fourth stone: the Bible
The Bible which illuminates the path in the dense fog of ideologies is the fourth stone for the Christian of today. I am sure you know where the salt is, where the flour is, and where to find the sugar in the kitchen. But where is the Bible in your home? When do you read the Bible with your family?
The Bible is not one of many books, it is the Christian’s flag. Deprived of the Bible, the Christian is no longer the same person. The Bible is born from the heart of the Lord; it is His Word. Therefore it must remain in first place within the family. It must be set in a place of honour, and that place must be sacred for us. It must be the source of our prayer. The Bible illuminates the Christian’s walk amid doubt and conflicting ideologies today.

Fifth stone: Confession
Confession is the fifth stone. Our Lady requests monthly confession of us. I have been informed that in Italy and Switzerland, at many churches, the people rarely confess. The Italians, I state with certainty, are prepared to renew the Church, but they must not neglect Confession.
The purpose of Confession is not to recount one’s actions; it is not a psycho-analytical session. It is a sacrament and a source of peace with oneself in the meeting with the Lord. In Confession I obtain the peace of the Lord so that I may transmit it to others.
A proud person does not know how to confess; humility leads to confession and conversion. To confess well we must prepare ourselves with fasting and prayer. The proper attitude is that of opening ourselves up before the Lord: “I have brought you my heart. Transform it for me, and give it back to me renewed.” This is what occurs in Confession, which is both a sacrament and a mystery.

These are the five stones we must place in our sack as we return home from Medjugorje. Our Lady heals us here. Prayer, Fasting, the Mass, the Bible, and Confession are the true medicines that restore us to health once again, the way through the Red Sea, leading us to the shore where we find peace.
