Novena ai trenta martiri francescani di Siroki Brieg

Rinnoviamo il ringraziamento ai 30 martiri francescani dell’Erzegovina,

per aver difeso la fedeltà a Cristo e al Vangelo.

O Regina dei martiri, la Tua potente intercessione ottenga ai tuoi “Cari figli martiri” la giusta gloria nella Chiesa pellegrinante, quella gloria che già posseggono nella Chiesa celeste. O Regina dei martiri, la Tua potente intercessione ottenga al mondo intero una fede incrollabile, una fede grande e pura come quella testimoniata dai nostri martiri francescani.

Come i trenta frati ricevettero la palma del ma ritiro

Durante la dominazione turca della Bosnia-Erzegovina, dodici francescani originari dell'Erzegovina e provenienti da Kresevo in Bosnia, decisero di costruire un monastero nella loro terra d'origine, come segno della fede, e scelsero la località di Siroki Brijeg. Si sistemarono in questo piccolo villaggio e, dopo aver co prato a caro prezzo un grande appezzamento di terreno, iniziarono a costruire la chiesa dedicandola alla Madonna Assunta in Cielo. Subito iniziarono anche i lavori per edificare il monastero e successivamente un edificio da adibire a seminario.

Nelle vicinanze edificarono un centro scolastico che comprendeva anche una scuola ginnasiale ove i frati insegnavano alle giovani generazioni della Bosnia-Erzegovina. Venne pure costruita una casa per tutti quelli che venivano da lontano per frequentare la scuola. Così, il luogo divenne un centro culturale cristiano ed il santuario si trasformò in un simbolo per l'Erzegovina. Esattamente cento anni dopo, il monastero veniva distrutto e devastato. E’ successo così: il 7 febbraio 1945, i partigiani comunisti decisero di distruggere dalle fondamenta il simbolo cristiano e sradicare dal cuore del popolo la fede cattolica e la benevolenza e la riconoscenza verso i frati francescani.

Sono arrivati a Siroki Brijeg alle tre del pomeriggio e hanno trovato nel monastero trenta religiosi; molti di loro erano professori nel ginnasio alle spalle del monastero. I comunisti hanno detto: "Dio è morto, Dio non c'è, non c'è il Papa, non c'è la Chiesa, non c'è bisogno di voi, andate anche voi nel mondo a lavorare". Con minacce e bestemmie hanno cercato di persuadere i frati a lasciare l'abito religioso. Essi hanno risposto: "Noi siamo religiosi, consacrati, non possiamo lasciare il nostro abito". Allora, un soldato arrabbiato ha preso la Croce e ha buttato il Crocifisso sul pavimento. "Ecco, ha detto, adesso potete scegliere la vita o la morte".

Ognuno di loro si è inginocchiato, ha abbracciato e baciato Gesù; stringendo la croce sul petto, ognuno ha detto come San Francesco: "Tu sei il mio Dio, il mio Tutto". Come ho già detto, alcuni frati erano professori molto famosi, avevano scritto molti libri e manuali per la scuola. Ma essi non hanno abbracciato i loro libri e detto: "Voi siete per me tutto". No! Hanno abbracciato Gesù, il Maestro! Pieni di odio e di livore, i persecutori allora hanno preso i frati ad uno ad uno, li hanno portati fuori dal convento e li hanno uccisi; poi hanno cosparso di benzina i loro corpi e li hanno bruciati.

I frati sono andati incontro alla morte pregando e cantando le litanie della Madonna. Queste cose sono state testimoniate dai militari che facevano parte del plotone d'esecuzione. Uno di quei soldati è rimasto scioccato dal comportamento eroico dei frati. Lui ha raccontato: "Fin da bambino, nella mia famiglia, ho sempre sentito dalla mamma che Dio c'è, Dio esiste. Al contrario, Lenin, Stalin, Tito avevano sempre affermato e fatto di tutto per inculcare in ciascuno di noi: Dio non c'è, non esiste! Quando le circostanze della vita mi hanno portato a trovarmi di fronte ai martiri di Siroki Brijeg e ho visto come quei frati hanno affrontato la morte, pregando e benedicendo i loro persecutori, chiedendo a Dio di perdonare le colpe dei carnefici, allora mi sono risuonate chiare la parole di mia madre e ho pensato: la mia mamma aveva ragione, Dio c'è, Dio esiste!" Quel soldato, oggi, è convertito ed ha un figlio sacerdote e una figlia suora.

Nella loro furia, oltraggiarono e cancellarono la scritta sulla pietra posta sopra l'ingresso principale del convento su cui era scolpito il nome di Dio e la dedicazione alla Madonna Assunta. Quella dedica oggi non è più leggibile, ma il sangue dei martiri l'ha scritta ancor più profondamente nei cuori del popolo e brilla luminosa agli occhi del Signore. Si può cancellare una dedica, si può bruciare, distruggere, rovinare, ma non si può togliere la fede dal cuore della Chiesa. Ancora oggi nel santuario si vive, si onora e si festeggia la Madonna con grande amore.

Il santuario è il più grande in tutta la Bosnia Erzegovina: è un simbolo, un segno. I comunisti hanno pensato che distruggere il "segno" sarebbe finita anche la fede. Invece, la fede è cresciuta e si è sviluppata sotto il manto e la protezio ne della Madonna. Anche i nostri martiri francescani sono cresciuti e vissuti avvolti dal manto della Madonna. I corpi dei trenta testimoni della fede sono rimasti nascosti sotto terra per anni e anni; non si poteva nominarli né fare alcuna commemorazione. Ma il sangue dei martiri gridava ed era di esempio per tutti, così sono fiorite nei cuori nuove vocazioni e la chiesa e la fede sono cresciute come albero rigoglioso.

In quel tempo, io avevo 4 anni e mi ricordo come spesso i miei genitori raccontavano ciò che era capitato ai frati. E questo avveniva anche in tante famiglie di miei coetanei. Nel nostro cuore cresceva sempre più il desiderio di imitare i nostri martiri e diventare frati noi stessi.

I nostri martiri sono testimoni della fede e testimoni dell'amore verso Dio e verso il prossimo. I trenta martiri francesca ni non sono divenuti martiri per caso o per un incidente; essi, coscientemente e con grande gioia, hanno offerto la propria vita e hanno testimoniato il loro Credo.

Questo è molto importante. Come la Chiesa ha sempre fatto e insegnato così essi hanno perdonato i nemici, hanno pregato per i persecutori, hanno benedetto i loro carnefici. Allo stesso modo di Massimiliano Kolbe e tanti altri! Tra i vari martiri vi è solo la differenza del mezzo e del modo del martirio, ma tutti hanno sempre manifestato un grande ardore e un grande amore: l'amore che brucia l'odio, che brucia e distrugge la violenza e tutto cambia e trasforma nella gioia, in una festa, nella vittoria della grazia del Signore. La Chiesa vive del sangue dei suoi figli martiri. Essi rimangono sempre una grande forza della Chiesa. Noi che viviamo in questo luogo e voi che pellegrinate qui, possiamo riflettere un po’ sul valore della nostra fede e approfondire quanto vale per noi la nostra fede; quanto sono disposto a dare nella mia vita per il mio Dio, cosa posso fare io per il mio Gesù, cosa signi fica per me il mio Cristo, la Sua croce, la mia vocazione cri stiana.

Una settimana dopo l'eccidio di Sìroki Brijeg, i comunisti andarono a Mostar e nel convento trovarono sette frati. Pur sapendo cosa era accaduto a Siroki Brijeg, essi avevano deciso di non scappare ma di rimanere nel monastero. Uno di loro era Fra Leon-Grgo Petrovic, dottore in teologia, nato a Klobuk nel 1883. Egli, come Provinciale dei francescani, all'inizio della guerra, aveva sentito nel cuore la grazia di consacrare alla Madonna tutti i suoi frati che sentiva erano in pericolo.Ora possiamo vedere come quella Consacrazione sia fiorita. La devozione alla Madonna, quel bel fiore offerto alla beata Vergine, è fiorito nel giorno dell'eccidio, il 7 febbraio 1945. Come Dio Padre ha mandato il Figlio a morire per salvare tutto il mondo, e Gesù è rimasto obbediente accettando il proprio sacrificio, così i nostri martiri hanno offerto la propria vita e il proprio sangue per la salvezza degli uomini, per la pace, per la nostra conversione.

Si sono immolati per la pace e per il bene di tutta la Chiesa. Voglio ora presentarti i nostri frati che sono divenuti maturi per il martirio - alcuni avevano solo vent’anni - e che sono stati capaci di testimoniare per Cristo e dimostrare chi è Cristo per loro, per noi. Con amore e venerazione ti rivelo i loro nomi e cognomi, (…). Così, tu potrai riflettere come ognuno, con il proprio nome e la propria vita, può anche oggi servire Dio e può rispondere alla Sua chiamata.

CENNI SUL SANTUARIO DELLA MADONNA ASSUNTA IN CIELO DI SIROKI BRIJEG

La posa della prima pietra avvenne il 23 luglio 1846 e la costruzione della chiesa fu iniziata il 23 settembre 1846 insieme all’attiguo monastero. L’edificio eretto in quel tempo era di mt. 20 di lunghezza e di mt. 10 di larghezza. Nel 1863 fu deciso di costruire una chiesa più grande e fu affidata la progettazione all’architetto italiano Matteo Lorenzoni. Egli progettò una basilica a tre navate in stile barocco ma non fu mai realizzata per mancanza di fondi e operai specializzati. Nel 1905 fu abbattuta la vecchia chiesa e il 20 giugno di quell’anno iniziò la costruzione dell’attuale santuario che terminò nel 1938. Il campanile sul lato settentrionale fu eretto nel 1927. Sul finire della seconda guerra mondiale e nell’immediato dopoguerra, la chiesa ed il convento subirono gravi danni da parte dei partigiani comunisti che per tre mesi hanno sparato con tutta l’artiglieria. Ciò che restava del patrimonio culturale e prezioso della chiesa, del convento e del ginnasio fu distrutto e incendiato.

Signore i martiri di Siroki Brijeg furono vittime della guerra. Il loro sacrificio e il sangue versato possono far terminare le guerre nel mondo e ogni guerra che esiste nel cuore di ognuno e nelle famiglie, nel cuore e nella vita della Chiesa. La loro intercessione possa portare conforto a tutte le vittime delle guerre perché abbiano la forza di portare la propria croce, di testimoniare la fede e l’amore verso Te e verso il prossimo. Per loro intercessione, fa’ che possiamo sperimentare la grazia della conversione. Tutto l’ateismo e l’orgoglio che sono in noi, possano essere inceneriti. Rendici capaci, per loro intercessione, di sapere perdonare anche i nostri nemici e fare bene a quelli che ci odiano e ci rifiutano. Pater, Ave e Gloria. Regina dei martiri, prega per noi.

Oggi, in questi tempo di autocompiacimento, di menzogna e di cupidigia possa l’intercessione dei nostri martiri liberarci da ogni male e utilizzare saggiamente i nostri beni terreni, per poter essere capaci di servirTi, e di seguirTi e di amare Te sopra ogni cosa. Prima di morire, i nostri martiri dissero: “Se ci portano via tutto e lo distruggono, non potranno prenderci la Bibbia”. E la Bibbia rimase nelle mani dei nostri martiri. Signore, donaci la grazia di amare la Bibbia, la tua Parola vivente di cui ogni uomo vive. Apri i nostri cuori alla Tua Parola, affinché la possiamo meditare e radicare nella nostra vita. Possano i nostri cuori diventare tabernacoli viventi della Tua Parola che ci ispirerà, ci darà coraggio nella sventura e ci guarirà dalla nostra debolezza. Pater, Ave e Gloria. Per intercessione dei nostri martiri, aiuta tutti quelli che varcano la soglia di questo santuario perché siano esaudite le loro preghiere e le loro suppliche, siano confortati nella sventura, siano guariti da ogni malattia e trovino pace e benedizione. O Gesù, per la potenza del Tuo e loro sangue del martirio, possano essere innalzati agli onori degli altari e annoverati fra i Tuoi Santi. Per loro intercessione e loro preghiere, fa’ che possiamo essere colmati di grazia e possano essere esaudite le nostre preghiere. Pater, Ave e Gloria. Regina dei martiri, prega per noi.

Testimoni oculari hanno rivelato che, sul luogo dell’esecuzione, molti di essi impartivano l’assoluzione ai loro nemici con il segno della croce e pregavano per i carnefici. Signore, fa’ che anche noi possiamo imparare a perdonare i nostri nemici, a fare il bene e contraccambiare con il bene a quelli che ci odiano e ci perseguitano. Pater, Ave e Gloria. La Commissione Internazionale d’inchiesta su Medjugorje si è radunata per la sua prima sessione il 26 marzo scorso. Lo rende noto un comunicato della Sala Stampa vaticana. La Commissione, presieduta dal cardinale Camillo Ruini, vicario generale emerito del Papa per la Diocesi di Roma, è composta dai seguenti membri: cardinale Jozef Tomko, prefetto emerito della Congregazione per l’Evangelizzazione dei Popoli, cardinale Vinko Puljić, arcivescovo di Sarajevo, presidente della Conferenza episcopale di Bosnia ed Erzegovina, cardinale Josip Bοzanić, arcivescovo di Zagabria, vicepresidente del Consiglio delle Conferenze Episcopali d’Europa, cardinale Julián Herranz, presidente emerito del Pontificio Consiglio per i Testi Legislativi, mons. CDF GUIDELINES ON SEXUAL ABUSE ALLEGATIONS

VATICAN CITY, 12 APR 2010 (VIS) - Today the Vatican website, under the section called "Focus", published a guide to understanding the procedures of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on sexual abuse allegations towards minors.

Guide to Understanding Basic CDF Procedures concerning Sexual Abuse Allegations

The applicable law is the Motu Proprio "Sacramentorum sanctitatis tutela" (MP SST) of 30 April 2001 together with the 1983 Code of Canon Law. This is an introductory guide which may be helpful to lay persons and non-canonists.

A: Preliminary Procedures

The local diocese investigates every allegation of sexual abuse of a minor by a cleric.
If the allegation has a semblance of truth the case is referred to the CDF. The local bishop transmits all the necessary information to the CDF and expresses his opinion on the procedures to be followed and the measures to be adopted in the short and long term.

Civil law concerning reporting of crimes to the appropriate authorities should always be followed.

During the preliminary stage and until the case is concluded, the bishop may impose precautionary measures to safeguard the community, including the victims. Indeed, the local bishop always retains power to protect children by restricting the activities of any priest in his diocese. This is part of his ordinary authority, which he is encouraged to exercise to whatever extent is necessary to assure that children do not come to harm, and this power can be exercised at the bishop's discretion before, during and after any canonical proceeding.

B: Procedures authorized by the CDF

The CDF studies the case presented by the local bishop and also asks for supplementary information where necessary.
The CDF has a number of options:

B1 Penal Processes

The CDF may authorize the local bishop to conduct a judicial penal trial before a local Church tribunal. Any appeal in such cases would eventually be lodged to a tribunal of the CDF.

The CDF may authorize the local bishop to conduct an administrative penal process before a delegate of the local bishop assisted by two assessors. The accused priest is called to respond to the accusations and to review the evidence. The accused has a right to present recourse to the CDF against a decree condemning him to a canonical penalty. The decision of the Cardinals members of the CDF is final.

Should the cleric be judged guilty, both judicial and administrative penal processes can condemn a cleric to a number of canonical penalties, the most serious of which is dismissal from the clerical state. The question of damages can also be treated directly during these procedures.

B2 Cases referred directly to the Holy Father

In very grave cases where a civil criminal trial has found the cleric guilty of sexual abuse of minors or where the evidence is overwhelming, the CDF may choose to take the case directly to the Holy Father with the request that the Pope issue a decree of "ex officio" dismissal from the clerical state. There is no canonical remedy against such a papal decree.

The CDF also brings to the Holy Father requests by accused priests who, cognizant of their crimes, ask to be dispensed from the obligation of the priesthood and want to return to the lay state. The Holy Father grants these requests for the good of the Church ("pro bono Ecclesiae").

B3 Disciplinary Measures

In cases where the accused priest has admitted to his crimes and has accepted to live a life of prayer and penance, the CDF authorizes the local bishop to issue a decree prohibiting or restricting the public ministry of such a priest. Such decrees are imposed through a penal precept which would entail a canonical penalty for a violation of the conditions of the decree, not excluding dismissal from the clerical state. Administrative recourse to the CDF is possible against such decrees. The decision of the CDF is final.

C. Revision of MP SST

For some time the CDF has undertaken a revision of some of the articles of "Motu Proprio Sacramentorum Sanctitatis tutela", in order to update the said Motu Proprio of 2001 in the light of special faculties granted to the CDF by Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI. The proposed modifications under discussion will not change the above-mentioned procedures (A, B1-B3).

How can an organization tell young, confused women that this is just a “piece of tissue” and that it isn’t a baby until birth? And do so all under the ruse of trying to help women, abusing the trust of their medical license, and then taking both the woman’s money and her child’s life?

Vatican City, Apr 11, 2010 / 01:22 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- After the Regina Coeli prayer on Sunday, the Holy Father repeated his condolences to the "beloved Polish nation" for the deaths of President Lech Kaczynski and so many others in a plane crash on Saturday. The Pope assured the country of his prayers and entrusted the victims to the "merciful Lord of life."

"As we all know, yesterday saw the tragic airplane accident in Smolensk (Russia) in which the President of Poland, Mr. Lech Kaczynski, his wife, various high authorities of the Polish State and all of the delegation, including the Military Ordinary Archbishop perished," the Pope said.

"In expressing my profound condolences, I assure my heartfelt prayer of homage for the victims and of support for the beloved Polish nation," he added.

The Polish leader and delegation were on their way to the village of Katyn to commemorate, in a ceremony with Russian officials, the 70th anniversary of the assassination of more than 20,000 Polish military officers in World War II.

It was confirmed on Sunday that 97 people died in the crash.

In his individual language greetings to pilgrims, the Pope said, in Polish, that it was "with deep sorrow" that he found out about the accident. Remembering the victims and the reason for their visit to Russia, he entrusted "all to the merciful Lord of life."

"I do it," he told the audience, "uniting myself with the pilgrims gathered from the Sanctuary of Lagiewniki and with all those devoted to the Mercy of God in the entire world."

Citizens of Poland observed two minutes of silence on Sunday to remember the victims.

Vatican City, Apr 11, 2010 / 01:07 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Saturday morning saw the first visitors enter the Cathedral of Turin, taking advantage of a rare opportunity to view the ancient relic at its first exposition in close to a decade. The Holy Father welcomed the exposition as "an extraordinary call back towards the mystery of the suffering of Christ."

The first public exposition of the Shroud since 2000 offers a "path of faith and prayer" for the more than 1.5 million pilgrims and visitors that will see it, according to the Cardinal Archbishop of Turin, Severino Poletto, who celebrated the opening Mass on Saturday afternoon along with the bishops of Italy's Piedmont region.

The Shroud of Turin was seen by thousands of people on the exposition's first day. Among those able to attend for veneration on the opening morning were local civil and religious authorities, journalists and the 4,000 volunteers who will provide assistance for the duration of the showing, from April 10 to May 23.

Following afternoon Mass, 12,000 pilgrims with reserved tickets were able to file through the Cathedral for a prayer and a glimpse at the burial cloth believed to bear the image of Jesus' crucified body.

Pope Benedict XVI said on Sunday that, "God willing," he will also be among the pilgrims to pay his respects during a visit he has planned for May 2.

He noted his happiness at the event after the Regina Caeli prayer at noon on Sunday, saying that it is "once again provoking a vast movement of pilgrims, but also studies, reflections and most of all an extraordinary call back towards the mystery of the suffering of Christ."

The Holy Father also expressed his wish that "this act of veneration may help all to seek the Face of God, that was the intimate aspiration of the Apostles, as well as ours."

Vatican City, Apr 11, 2010 / 10:56 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Holy Father welcomed Divine Mercy Sunday from the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo, focusing his address before the Marian prayer on Sunday's reading from the Gospel of John. In his words, he acknowledged the value of Thomas' doubt for Christians today and reflected on Jesus' imparting of the Holy Spirit and the mission of the Church.

St. John's account which narrates Jesus' visit to the disciples in the Cenacle after his resurrection, said the Pope, is "rich" with "mercy and divine goodness."

Benedict XVI quoted St. Augustine who explained the scene in which Christ's body, "inhabited by divinity," is not impeded from entering the closed doors of the Upper Room. St. Gregory the Great, he noted, described the Redeemer's arrival in a state of glory, with an uncorruptible and palpable body.

Once in the room, Jesus allows the "incredulous" Thomas to verify the signs of the passion present on Jesus' body, recalled the Pope, adding that the "divine compliance" of Jesus in permitting Thomas to touch him continues to be as profitable for us as it was for the other disciples.

"In fact, touching the wounds of the Lord, the doubtful disciple cures not only his, but also our diffidence," he observed.

Putting the scene in perspective, the Holy Father explained that the Risen Christ's visit was not limited to the Cenacle, "but goes beyond, so that everyone may receive the gift of peace and life with the 'Creating Breath.'"

In Jesus' words and actions in the locked upper chamber, he establishes the mission of the Church ever aided by the Holy Spirit, which is, the Pope said, "to carry out to all the glad announcement, the joyous reality of the merciful Love of God ..."

Pope Benedict concluded his words by encouraging priests, "in light of this word," to follow the example of St. Jean Vianney in helping people to "perceive the merciful love of the Lord" whose announcement and a "witness to the truth of Love" is important also today.

"In this way we will make ever more familiar and close He that our eyes haven't seen, but of his infinite Mercy we have absolute certainty."

Beginning the Regina Caeli prayer, he asked for the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Queen of the Apostles, in "sustaining the mission of the Church."

In his post-prayer address, he remembered those from Poland who died in a tragic plane crash on Saturday morning in Russia. He also welcomed the opening of the exposition of the Shroud of Turin and wished a blessed Divine Mercy Sunday to all.

Sarà presente infine il giornalista Paolo Brosio, autore del libro “A un passo dal baratro. Perché Medjugorje ha cambiato la mia vita” che racconterà della sua vita dopo la conversione.
