As we reflect on the life of Mother Teresa, who died four years ago this month, and whose canonization process is actively underway, aspects of her miraculous life keep coming to the surface. Most of them involve examples of her fantastic love which knew no personal, political or religious bounds. Perhaps none is more surprising and even amazing - and revealing -- than a request she made during a tour of Africa she had made many years
A Catholic nun, who is sure to be recognized as a saint, asking for construction of a Muslim mosque! How does such an act of true love set with so many of us today in light of the horror of Islamic extremism leading to millions of terrorist inflicted deaths?
Take a moment to read-or reread-
Our Lady's latest message given on September 2: Dear children, I am beside you because I desire to help you to overcome trials, which this time of purification puts before you. My children, one of those is not to forgive and not to ask for forgiveness. Every sin offends Love and distances you from it - and Love is my Son. (Emphasis added). Therefore, my children, if you desire to walk with me towards the peace of God's love, you must learn to forgive and to ask for forgiveness. Thank you.
What greater proof of such love is there than the words given to us by the Blessed Virgin in September's message given on the second day of the month. As the most Holy Virgin points out, we must forgive and we must ask for forgiveness. We do neither when we hold prejudices against others whether they be individuals or groups or races or religions. We are the ones who established the boundaries between what we believe and what others believe.
Here is another incident depicting humble love, this one given by Our Lady in the early days of the apparitions, Mary pointed out a very humble and faithful woman to the visionaries as an example of faith she was trying to teach them. "But dear Mother", one of the visionaries exclaimed in shocked surprise, "That woman is a Muslim!"
"Yes, I know," she answered calmly. "But that is for God to decide. You are to convert your own hearts and not worry about others." (Paraphrased).
Another example of such humility came through a story related to me by a good priest friend He had the good fortune to meet and work with Mother Teresa. One day he asked her if she would like to visit Medjugorje, knowing that she firmly believed in the apparitions. "Oh, no," she answered quietly. "I would be a distraction." She then added: "But would you do me a favor?"
"Of course," my priest friend responded, "What is it?"
"Would you please ask Our Lady to intercede in finding a cure for AIDS?"
Here again, we pause for thought: This holy woman asking for a cure of a disease many of us associate with sin?
These words and actions of Mother Teresa are important words at a time when pride runs rampant. And, as Our Lady has pointed out numerous times in her messages given at Medjugorje, pride is the ugly and unholy presence of Satan in our daily lives. It is the antithesis of humble acts of love, regardless of faith, color or sex. That is the gift of Mother Teresa. A woman who was unafraid to act in love. A woman who was a true imitation of Jesus.
One last thought. I think Mother Teresa is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Her beauty, like that of Our Lady described by the visionaries many times, is a beauty of pure love honed out of humility and acceptance of all of God's children, regardless of their present condition in life.
The peace, grace and LOVE of Jesus be with each of you.
